東 學 (gaku azuma)
絵師・アートディレクター ／ 1963年12月 京都生まれ ／ 株式会社 一八八 所属
大阪ミナミ在住の絵師・アートディレクター。父は扇絵師・東 笙蒼。幼い頃から絵筆に親しむ。14才から3年間、 米国留学。留学時代に描いた作品「フランス人形」は、ニューヨークのメトロ ポリタン美術館に永久保存されている。20才より、グラフィックデザイナー としての頭角を現す。1997年、劇団維新派率いる松本雄吉にアートワークを認められ、宣伝美術を任される。以降、アングラから古典芸能、現代演劇 やクラシック音楽まで数々のポスタービジュアルを手がける。一方、現代絵師 としての活動も注目されており、2003年、ニューヨークの日本料理店から 装飾画を受注、墨画［天妖廓シリーズ］を制作。2005年、画家・鉄秀との コラボレーションによる大型墨画「麒舞羅」が大阪市長賞を受賞。2007 年、専門誌『広告批評』の特集“ニッポンを描く”に於いて、墨画「闇縫い」 「ろくろ首」「百目」等が紹介される。2007年12月、初の墨画集『天妖』（PARCO出版）を刊行。アート・ディレクターとして、また絵師として各界から注目されている。
Gaku Azuma
“UKIYOE”Painter/Art director of the 188 Corporation, Osaka
Painter and art director; currently lives in Osaka Minami (the southern city center of Osaka, Japan). Born in December 1963, in Kyoto, the son of the ougi-e (painting or calligraphy on a paper fan) artist, Shoso Azuma.
Growing up in an artistic environment, painting became his nature. He moved to the United States for education and stayed for three years from age 14. “French Doll”, which he painted while living in the U.S., is permanently housed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
At the age of 20, he began distinguishing himself as a graphic artist. Recognized by Yukichi Matsumoto and his
theatre company “Ishinha” in 1967, he was commissioned to design advertising art for the company. Since then, he continues to design posters for a wide range of music and performing arts from underground to traditional performing arts, modern plays, and classical music.
On the other hand, he has been followed as a modern eshi (painter in a traditional sense, e.g. ukiyo-e artist). In 2003, commissioned to create decorative paintings for a Japanese restaurant in New York, he produced a collection of boku-ga (a.k.a. sumi-e, black water-ink painting) titled, “Tenyou-Kuruwa” .
In 2005, he collaborated with the painter, Tesshu, for a large-scale boku-ga, “Kimaira”, and received the Osaka Mayor’s Award. His boku-ga’s, “Bride of Frankenstein”, “The Long Neck”, and “A Hundred Eyes” were introduced in the special feature, “Painting Japan”, of an industrial magazine, “Kokoku Hihyo Monthly” in 2007.
